Liturgical Ministry

Men and women, boys and girls perform various duties during weekend Masses and special services. We welcome our parishioners to choose from the many available options to share their time and talents in the liturgical ministries of the parish.

Ministers of Hospitality / Greeters and Ushers:  Just as you would greet guests to your home, these ministers provide a welcoming environment as they greet parishioners and guests alike. Our Hospitality Ministers serve the gathered assembly in providing seating assistance and passing out worship aides, passing the baskets during collection, inviting a family or couple to carry the Offertory Gifts, passing out bulletins as people leave the church, clearing the pews after Mass, and overseeing the safety and needs of the assembly. Training is offered to individuals or families that wish to serve together in this ministry.

Lectors: These men and woman are the storytellers. They proclaim the sacred Scripture texts at Masses and special services. Having good communication skills is a definite plus for becoming a lector. Training for those interested is offered.

Eucharistic Ministers: These parishioners help distribute the Body and the Blood of Christ. Those who are willing to do this most privileged service during Mass are certainly invited to become part of this ministry. Training is offered.

Altar Servers: Altar Servers help in serving the Priest and Deacon during the Mass. Young parishioners, who are in grades fifth and up are invited to become servers. Training is offered for those who are interested. Altar Servers help at weekend Masses, Funeral Liturgies, and Weddings. Adults are certainly welcome to serve in this capacity as well).

My Time with Jesus Facilitators: The purpose of this “Liturgy of the Word for Children” is to lead youngsters to worship. The children leave the church and spend time learning about the readings. This celebration is an extension of the adult assembly and gives children the opportunity to focus on the Word of God at a level they can understand, returning to their families at the Sign of Peace. Training and materials are provided for those adults who lead. Facilitators submit availability and are scheduled accordingly. My Time with Jesus is offered at the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday Masses.

Mass Coordinators: These ministers help liturgies run smoothly at St. Joseph’s. They prepare for the service beforehand and make sure things are in order afterward. Mass coordinators are responsible for finding last minute replacements for Liturgical Ministries and filling-in themselves if the need arises.

Prayers of the Faithful Writers: These men and women write the Mass petitions. We lift these up at weekend Masses, calling out, “Lord hear our prayer.” Members write the prayers on a rotating schedule and e-mail them to the parish. Resources are provided. This has become a very fulfilling prayer ministry at St. Joseph’s.

Ministry Scheduler Pro: Our online scheduler helps make ministry flexible and smooth for our liturgical ministers. With this software, the ministers receive automated e-mail reminders and have access to a web terminal that shows when they are scheduled, allows them to easily request subs and lets the parish know when someone has requested not to be scheduled for a particular date or extended period. (The Liturgical Schedule is every two months).
